Harold Hunt was born in Mildenhall on 18th April 1906, (Mildenhall Q2-1906 4A:973) son of George William and Fanny HUNT (née PLUMMER).

1911 census...Aged 4, he was at Mill Street, Mildenhall with his father George William HUNT [35] domestic groom born Bury St Edmunds; his mother Fanny [35] born Ixworth; sister Florie [15] born Ixworth, brothers Jack [11] born Ixworth, Joe [10] born Drinkstone, Roland [2] and George [1] both born Mildenhall. One sibling of 8 had died.

He married Joyce H Dawson in Erpingham, Norfolk in 1936, and his father died in 1936.

In the 1939 register he was at Bungalow, Beechwood Avenue, Erpingham, Norfolk with his wife Joyce H [31-3-1912]. He was a provisions hand at a department store. His widowed mother Fanny [18-8-1875] was at Beck Row Road, Mildenhall with his sister Florence E [6-6-1897] and William John SHERMAN [12-5-1931] (an evacuee?). His brother Roland was at Half Moon Place, Mildenhall with his wife Dorothy. Brother Joe was at 2 Council Houses, Holywell Row with his wife Ethel and 2 daughters. Brother George was at Pinewood, Bury Road, Mildenhall with his wife Olive and their son.

Harold's Japanese PoW card gives his occupation as shop assistant, born Mildenhall, and apparently his wife Joyce was c/o Mrs Dawson (must be her mother), Keepers Cottage, Gresham, Norwich. She later moved to Aylmerton, Norfolk.


Harold was captured on 15th February 1942 at the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese. Originally buried in Tamarkan Main cemetery, he was re-interred in Kanchanaburi on 27th January 1946.
